1. PETER COULTER died December 1828 - January 1829 in Fairfax County, Virginia.
He married SARAH //.
Notes:
Tobacco inspector in Colchester, Fairfax County, Virginia. [Inspector bonds available
in Fairfax County deed books.]
["Colchester: Colonial Port on the Potomac;" Edith Moore Sprouse; Fairfax County
Office of Comprehensive Planning, Fairfax, VA; March 1975.]: Inspector at the
tobacco warehouse c. 1799-1806, Coulter had operated a fishery at nearby Sandy
Point in 1781. Bought #27, the tanyard lot, in 1792 from Dowman, paying taxes on it
sporadically until 1825. He and his wife had seven children, two of whom were John
and Cordelia, Coulter's will was presented in 1829. He left an 84 acre tract and 19
slaves. His wife was dead by 1836.
Colchester was a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia several miles from Occoquan,
Prince William County, Virginia. The town no longer
exists.
Will of Peter Coulter, Fairfax County Will Book P, pp. 242-244; dated 12/7/1828,
proved 1/19/1829: Wife (unnamed) still living at time will was written. Daughters:
Margaret, Sally (and son Edgar Floroy), Susannah Davis (and her heirs), Cordelia (no
issue at time of will), Elizabeth (and her children: Sally Stone, George Stone, Edward
Stone). Sons: John (and his children (sic), Peter), Thomas (and his son Alexander,
daughter Martha). Executors: Hiram Davis and John
Davis.
[Fairfax County Deed Book D3, p. 291.] Deed of land willed by Peter Coulter to his
daughter, Cordelia C. Reeves, for use in her lifetime, otherwise to be divided between
her siblings. This land sold by John Coulter and wife Catharine, Job and Susan
Davis, and Margaret Hutchison in December 1829 to Thomas Wheeler. All parties of
Prince William and Fairfax Counties, Virginia.

William Smoot and wife. In 1845 he sold this same
land to Thomas Smoot.

enumerated with his father, John Coulter, in Prince
William County, Virginia.
1840 Virgina census the family lived in Fauquier
County, Virginia.
In the 1850 Virginia census, Peter Colter (39) is enumerated in Warren County,
Virginia with wife Alice (38) and children: Thomas (18), John (15), Mary Jane (13),
William (11), Alice (10), Peter (8), Obediah (5), and Savory A. (3). Peter was a cooper
according to the 1850 Virginia census.
Warren County, VA birth records include an unnamed stillborn daughter born to Peter
and Matilda Ailsey Coalter in September 1855.
In the 1860 Virginia census, Peter Coulter (47) is enumerated in Warren County, post
office of Linden, with wife Alice (46) and children: Mason (20 -- farmer), Alice (18),
Peter (16 -- farmhand), Obedi (13 -- "idiotic"), S. Ann (12), Samuel (9), Hanna (7), and
Caroline Sealock (17).
Linden, Virginia is a small town about five miles from Front Royal. Part of it lies in
Fauquier County and part of it lies in Warren County. It is located on Manassas Gap
and the main rail lines from Washington to the Shenandoah Valley run through it. It's
strategic location probably helps explain why the Coulter family farm buildings were
burned to the ground during the Civil War.

Served through the Civil War in the Confederate Army [Company D, 49th Virginia
Infantry] and was in the Battle of Antietam. At the end of the War, he moved to
